Web Reference: John Gavin Hurd (July 2, 1914 – September 6, 2001) [1] was an independent oil and gas producer and cattle rancher who was tapped by Richard Nixon to be the U.S. ambassador to South Africa (1970-1975) under President Nixon. John studied geology at the College of Charleston, and moved to New York City a couple of years later to become a full-time professional bridge player, where he and several others live in the infamous Murray Hill brownstone. Sep 6, 2001 · Hurd served in the Navy during World War II, where he was a surface warfare officer on destroyer escorts in the North Atlantic. He received the Bronze Star with Combat V, and retired from the Navy with the rank of Commander in 1946.
