Web Reference: Released by the newly formed Virgin Records America label, 1989's Workbook eschewed Mould's trademark wall-of-noise guitar for a lighter tone. Drummer Anton Fier (of the Feelies and later the Golden Palominos) and bassist Tony Maimone (of Pere Ubu) served as Mould's rhythm section. The record closes on a joyful note, and it’s hard not to connect this with Bob Mould’s own domesticity. He’s been with his now-husband for 15 years, the two flitting between a home in San Francisco and one in the desert. Mould was born in Malone, New York, a farming community near Lake Placid. His parents ran a mom-and-pop grocery store, where he worked, learning the value of a dollar and developing the business skills that would later enable him to take over his own management duties.
